ALNITAK

An interactive visualizer of stellar variability

OUR PROJECT

Our universe is in constant motion. In our visible sky, a non-instrumented, non-mathematical but star-loving observer is oblivious to the universe's expansion and stellar variability. We know that it is difficult to know their exact size and how far away they are from us just by observing their distinctive brightness. For this reason, the team focused on reconciling the data provided by the different space agencies. This numerical data was transformed into a dynamic graphical development to represent the stars in their spatial location in order to provide the user with a simulation space of the visible sky with a great variety of information.

The challenge of representing the constant movement of the stars was solved by means of a timeline, where the user can consult the location of the stars on certain predetermined dates in the web application and thus, can create a comparison of such movements through the cosmic calendar that we have created. In this way, the movement in the stars would vary in years; not just day by day as would normally be observed since the changes tend to be negligible to the human eye in such short times.

OUR INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

We use programming languages such as java, javascript, PHP, and HTML, and a SQL database, with connection with PHP, with the PHPMyAdmin system. In this way, we created a system to show people what the human eye cannot distinguish, a system where different stars are found, with a display of dates to verify the information of the star on a given date by displaying a popup with information about the selected star.

Our Team.

"The sky will never be the limit for all those who seek to reach for the stars".
